PPC works under the sponsorship of the Earth Island Institute, an environmental charity. In its aim to eliminate waste plastic, it advocates the use of eco-friendly plastics and encourages consumers to purchase such plastics.

They claim that plastic waste accounts for one fifth of all landfill waste. One billion nine hundred and forty million pounds of plastic trash are produced each year in the U.S. alone. This figure represents the combined solid and liquid wastes generated by households, cities, businesses, and institutions throughout the country. Because of this huge amount of plastic waste, the plastic pollution coalition estimates that millions of tons of plastic waste are disposed of each year. It also estimated that more than eight million Americans have to use plastic trash dump sites where they dump their daily plastics.

Plastic Pollution Coalition

According to the plastic pollution coalition, there are at least thirteen developing nations that suffer greatly due to plastic waste. Some of these countries are Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Chad, the Philippines, and South Africa. Most of these nations struggle to keep their environments clean as the number of plastics continues to grow. They are also experiencing the effects of pollution in terms of sea life. They are now working toward having a healthy ocean environment.

In addition to this, the plastic pollution coalition claims that single-use plastic packaging is harmful to the environment because it is non-biodegradable. As more consumers continue to choose plastics over more earth-friendly options, the problem will only get worse. Currently, the only way to make sure that plastics do not pollute the environment is to require that the materials go through special recycling. However, most countries have no means of doing this. The plastic packaging industry, therefore, continues to press for changes in the laws so that single-use plastic packaging is made mandatory.

Reduce Plastic Consumption

Because of these findings, the plastic pollution coalition has been trying to increase the awareness of consumers about the damage that plastic can cause the environment. One way that they have done this is by creating campaigns to convince people to reduce plastic consumption. One of these is the “No Plastic Bags” campaign, which is available on the Internet. This campaign focuses on the need to reduce plastic bags so that the environment does not suffer from the plastic pollution. In addition to this, they also advocate for the reduction of the use of plastic shopping bags and the use of cloth paper bags.

Another way that the group tries to fight plastic pollution is by supporting the reduction of plastics and encouraging the use of biodegradable plastics like glass and straws instead of plastic. Glass is made from wood pulp and straws are made from plants that have been used to produce them. Together, these materials make up a good alternative to plastic.

PETMA

The Plastic Manufacturers Association, or PETMA, is a member of the coalition and works closely with the environmental groups to support the campaign to decrease plastic consumption. Many major manufacturers have signed on to the campaign and it has proven to be very effective.

The Plastic Manufacturers Association and the Campaign for Recycling and Environmental Education (CARE) are part of the same organization and work together on many issues. One such effort is their “Compact for Clean Energy”. This is a 10-year commitment to support clean energy and to promote recycling. A lot of effort has been made to persuade major manufacturers to support such efforts. In fact, Wal-Mart is one of the many companies that has made this commitment.

Conclusion

In the end, as an environmentally conscious consumer, it is your responsibility to make wise choices when purchasing plastic bags. The plastic bag industry has been producing large quantities of plastic bags for years and has also been contributing to the increase in plastic pollution around the world. If you care about the environment, you should take every precaution to avoid plastic bag manufacture wherever possible. If you already use single-use plastic bags, it is your responsibility to change your habits and stop throwing them away. Help us reduce the amount of plastic waste going into our landfills by using reusable straws.
